twirlerina024 • 2y ago When they kick the ground after a poo, they're not trying to cover it up. They're using the scent glands in their feet to sort of make an arrow on the ground pointing at their poo so other dogs won't miss it. 62 ✓ Share ... botaglove OP • 2y ago I had no idea! Thought they were doing a bad job at covering it ☺ 18 ↑ Share That-redhead-artist • 2y ago Wow, I had no idea. I always thought of it as cleaning their feet. The more you know!

silent-spiral ⚫2y ago xylitol is super poisonous. This includes gum, toothpaste and rarely peanut butter. It's more poisonous than (american) chocolate which is bad but not usually lethal. A stick of gum is usually an ER visit, a handful of hershey's kisses is usually not. This may be well known but it needs to be more well known. 50 ↑ Share ... botaglove OP ⚫ 2y ago Great fact! • Also... Why is it just American chocolate? This makes me uncomfortable

MarleyDawg • 2y ago Dogs "tell time" from scent. Your dog will start getting excited or more active around the time you come home from work each day. They do this not by the actual clock, but because we are creatures of habit and are typically gone the same amount of the everyday. When we leave our scents in the hoose begin to reduce and we get home they are at a certain level. They become conditioned that we will return when our scents hit that lower level. 63 ↑ Share _Nychthemeron • 2y ago GSD

Trishbot 2y ago . Edited 2y ago The first time the term "man's best friend" was coined was for a hound dog named Old Drum. Neighbor shot him and his owner took him to court and proceeded to give one of the finest speeches that is forever immortalized on a plaque in front of a hound statue that is located in front of the court house. The speech goes like this: "Gentlemen of the Jury, the best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has

indipit • 2y ago Not sure it counts as my favorite, but it's a little known fact that I'm trying to get the word out, because it happens rarely, but when it happens, it happens fast. Predatory aggression in dogs can be triggered by the sound of children playing, babies crying and injured dogs screaming. This aggression is usually what happens when people say their dog just 'snapped' into violence. I saw it happen in my own yard. The dogs were outside, and my elderly borzoi broke his leg. He scre

bravenaike ⚫2y ago While most people know dogs don't see as much color as humans, not as many people know they don't see in as much detail as we do! Perfect sight for a human is 20:20, but for a dog, it's 20:70 or 20:80. However, dogs track movement better than people because of a structure in their eye called a visual streak, which humans don't have. So they're very good at seeing horizontal movement and tracking it, even if visually they might not be able to make out what it is precisely.

VinnyVincinny ⚫2y ago Not all mammals understand pointing but dogs and humans do. Even chimpanzee, a much more closely related to humans mammal, don't get it. Dogs even understand pointing when you do it with your eyes and not your hands.

smashmack 2y ago I literally just learned this today but: "Ideally, the nails should not touch the ground when standing on a firm level surface, but are long enough to provide traction when climbing a hill or digging. In a dog with long nails, the neurologic signals from the toenail touching the ground are interpreted by the brain as an inclined ground surface. This abnormal compensatory posture results in excess weight shifting onto the hind legs, overloading those joints."

LadyKnight33 ⚫2y ago Ooh! I love this question! Ok, there are so many things, but the first thing that jumps to mind is that Icelandic Sheepdogs have an extra toe. I heard that it's supposed to help them move on rocky cliffs.

LadyKnight33 • 2y ago Ok ok one more: many breeds of water dog actually have webbed toes to help them swim. Some examples: Portuguese Water Dogs, newfoundlands, Chesapeake bay retrievers and Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retrievers. And also for some reason my Pitt mix, who has none of those breeds

drawingladymoonshine • 2y ago Dogs have an infrared detector in their nose! It is a survival technique, for them to find their mother when they are tiny and can't see. It is also a way for them to sense predators, BUT it is also a reason why they might steel our seats on the couch when we get up! I learned this from a Netflix series about animals. There were other interesting facts, but I thought that was the most interesting. 73 ↑ Share all_on_my_own • 2y ago I feel like infra-red is a visual t

batmanstuff • 2y ago My parents' 14 y.o. maltpoo hates UPS trucks. They're the only vehicle he barks at and he does so aggressively. We don't know how or why he does it. 473 ↑ Share dogsnobRN ⚫2y ago Because every time he does it, they leave. This is why lots of dogs "only hate the {insert delivery person}." It's a self reinforcing behavior. They drive up -> I bark -> they get scared - -> they run. And since this happens every day, over and over, the dog really starts to feel like they're the ba
