Boss learned not to be a backseat driver This happened several years ago when I was tasked with driving my boss, some city official he was trying to impress and some of my fellow workers in our company van.

We were at a red light, behind a fairly loaded down truck. This truck was set up for working at job sites. It had a vice, a welder and other tools mounted on it and some of them stuck out beyond the fender a bit. The truck was waiting for the light to change so it could go straight. We were going to turn right once it was out of the way.

"Go around it on the right" the boss says. I had already thought about doing that, but was pretty sure that I didn't have enough room. I told him that. "You've got enough room!" he insisted. "I'm in a hurry. Go around it". His van, his rules. OK. I went around it.

One of those tools mounted on that truck stuck out just far enough that it sliced the outer sheet metal side of the van like a can opener all the way from the hood to the back fender.

He was even later after all the time it took for the cops to come and investigate and write a report.

Raven Mistwolf I would've refused if I was the one driving. When you're the one driving, you're the one on the hook for reckless behavior.

Reminds me of a farmer friend who was returning in his large dump truck to home base on a local highway when another motorist flagged him and told him he'd been in an accident a quarter mile before. He hadn't even noticed when a fool in a car had tried to pass him on the

right and sliced open his own car on the truck's rear axle. Even funnier was an anecdote by another friend: He was driving down a highway when he saw a weaver in a sporty car ram right into the back of a dump truck and stick there

like a My friend had to flag over the truck, as the driver hadn't even noticed the impact. Must have been an interesting police report.

sergybrin Many years back my bosses boss asked me to grab a fleet car and drive him into town. At that time I had a license to ride a motorbike but no license for a car. I told him I couldnt do it and was about to explain why when he jumped all over me with, I'm the boss, you do what I say and so on and so forth
  • 12
All in all he was acting like a so I kept my mouth shut about why I couldnt do it and let him run out of words and eventually got back to work. Eventually the disciplinary hearing came around and I fronted with the my union rep and the guy from the union.

His side had there say. I got up, said what happened, said I was going to explain why I couldnt do as asked but never got the chance, was sworn at, insulted AND never asked why I refused to do as instructed One of the tribunal members then asked why I refused.

Then I told them I was not licensed to drive a motor car and was not going to drive. unlicensed particularly as was working at the states. Road Traffic Authority. (ie the Government Department responsible for issuing driving licenses, registering cars etc. My bosses boss was given a mild talking too and I got my wrist slapped.

morgan423 As an incompetent boss, you absolutely just live for those moments where someone gives you a warning of caution, and you just stupidly hammer ahead with your decided course of action anyway to the detriment and ruin of all.

Stabbmaster Did anyone rub salt in that would? "You do realize that patiently waiting thirty seconds would have saved you 2 hours of police investigations and reports, right?"

crashmurdock I have two for you back in the mid 70's I was talking to a Truck driver that told me about a accident he had without knowing about it. He pulled up to a store to make a delivery and went to pull his ramps out from the racks. under the trailer and found a two seat sports car stuck in the holders instead. when he hit the truck he had pushed

the ramps out and stuck his car there instead 30 miles back. the sports car driver had been screaming his head off for the last 30 miles. Also back in the 70's guy I knew was telling about how he had been driving his KW truck and pup hauling 80 ton of rock when he noticed this guy all over the road. First in front on the

right then behind on the left then in front on the left then behind again. Told me a short while later he noticed he had not seen the guy in a few minuets so started looking for him when he noticed some flashy looking stuff around one of his tires and when he looked way back off the side of the road he say the car with a tire track through the middle of the car.
