Although there were a variety of reasons that these supervisors had to let someone go, a lot of them had to do with theft. As an retail employee, it can be easy to want to sneakily steal a shirt or a bottle of body wash. After all, the store makes thousands of dollars per day, they aren't going to miss one little item! But what employees underestimate is how petty stores are about theft. A lot of retail locations have excellent security cameras that capture every angle of the store. And these days, a lot of stores will let people steal over and over again, until they've wracked up enough stolen merchandise to send the person to jail. It's hard to resist that five-finger-discount, but it's not worth the punishment.
