Some of us may remember sifting through Shonen Jump magazines while in line at the local Blockbuster. Some of us may have had a collection, and some of us may still keep up with the magazine on the new Jump Live app. For the uninitiated, Shonen Jump is an anthology magazine that publishes new shonen manga chapters every week, and it has been doing so since 1968. Shonen Jump has featured the most globally successful manga of all time including Naruto, Slam Dunk, Death Note, Bleach, One Piece, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and of course, Dragon Ball.
Shonen Jump didn't start publishing in English until the 2000s, so these magazine covers may not scratch that nostalgia itch for non-Japanese speakers, but they are fascinating for dedicated and casual DB fans alike. Dragon Ball debuted in 1984 in issue #838, No. 51. For collectors, these first magazine covers are extremely sought after for their place in anime history as well as their unique and playful 80s style. Unfortunately, collecting them all does not summon any wish-granting dragons as far as I'm aware.
