Squatters and tenants' rights are different throughout the U.S. according to state. In some places, squatters and tenants have more rights than landlords, and in other states vice versa. This story happened in a state where tenants got more rights, however, this landlord used those rights against them.
A tenant had allowed his friends to live with him for a while, unbeknownst to the landlord. So when the legal tenant moved out, his friends became squatters and refused to leave or pay. Technically, the law made it very difficult for the landlord to kick them out. So what did the management company do? They sure didn't hire a lawyer. Instead, they hired a big scary-looking dude, had him move in as the new tenant, and paid him to be the most annoying person he could be. The squatters couldn't kick him out, because he was the legal tenant, so it became a standoff. The squatters eventually gave in and were out before the week was over.
