My colleague left suddenly with no notice and I've been covering for her for 2 months with no compensation. She got offered promotion I went for. I'm furious.

I've had it with this place. We both started as temps 11 months ago. She left without notice 2 months ago and I've been doing my own job and hers since. She kept teasing she'd come back and she never

leaving the company. And leaving me to work 2 jobs for the salary of one. I can't get a raise as I'm a temp. She's now permanent staff. I'm so angry. It hurts especially bad as my boss

blocked me from taking a promotion to the roles she's in right now 4 months ago. His logic was my work was too valuable to the team so I was needed...but not so valuable that I can't take on a whole

other role at the same time when it suits him. I want to cry. Help? Edit: have done 5 interviews in the last 2 months. 4 rejections so far (including this one). Guess I need to go on another application spree.

I can't afford to go more than 2 or 3 weeks without work as my salary isn't enough to save, especially as I only graduated college last year and pay extortionate rent.

onlyhereforBORU · 20 hr. ago The phrase "my work was too valuable to the team" should always be followed by searching for another job. They don't care about you or your career advancement. Only YOU can look after your career!

unitfiber . 18 hr. ago Absolutely agree. Start job hunting ASAP. Your current employer is clearly exploiting you, and you deserve better treatment and recognition. Don't let them take advantage of you any longer.

tatasz 17 hr. ago Look for another job, and meanwhile, do strictly what you're supposed to.

Smilydon - 20 hr. ago Quit. It sounds like a terrible place to work and terrible people to work for. That they hired your colleague for a permanent position despite quitting without notice is evidence of that.
  • 13
You've been doing the work of two people, why on earth would they promote you and lose that productivity? You're clearly a hard worker but got taken advantage of.
  • 14
Please try to understand that in this case, your employer is more interested in you continuing to do two people's work load, and your hard work will simply be rewarded with more work until you learn to stand up for yourself and find a place that values you better.

Additional_Meeting_2 · 18 hr. ago I think it did affect op. Most people can't quit immediately. I mean op should certainly now leave, but op could not most likely right after she did if there was no savings and alternative job. And got more work given. If op had notice then maybe the bosses had hired someone else or op would have had more time at least with less work

Alfitown · 18 hr. ago Then look for one...or I guess stay and let the company use your hard work for as little money and reward as possible. Your company you over big time. Don't feel bad for doing the same by quitting. Or be a doormat and let others use you as such...and they definetly will if you let them.

Murky-Section863 OP. 18 hr. ago Actively trying. I've done 5 interviews and lost out on 4 (including this one). Time to apply for more!

    • corrygan 19 hr. ago The problem here isn't your colleague, she is only trying to get to better position. Your company is at fault for not hiring a replacement. Also, this was your opportunity to ask for a better salary, courses or conditions in general.

Why such anger towards your former co-worker? People find better/ other jobs all the time. We owe it to ourselves and our families.
  • 22
Murky-Section863 OP 19 hr. ago I'm not annoyed with her. More annoyed that she's being awarded a permanent contract when she left without notice.

Personal_Fee_9594 - 19 hr. ago She played the game well, and forced the company to realize how valuable she was. There's no "honor" in a two week notice. Companies fire folks and walk them out the door 2min later, with no severance.
  • 24
Play the game like a company does, and provide them the same courtesy they would to you. Your boss loses zero sleep blocking you from promotions (which probably include an increase in pay + benefits). Why

on Earth are you tying your hands behind your back in the name of some warped idea of "ethics"? Be mad at your boss, and use that anger to fuel you to find a better opportunity.
