AITA for being mad at my dad over a Nintendo Switch? Last month, I was going to buy a Nintendo Switch for myself, but back at Thanksgiving, my dad strongly hinted that he was going to get me one for Christmas,
  • 03
which would have been awesome. Fast-forward to Christmas. I got my dad a nice 200-piece tool set to replace his very old (I think they're older than I am) and rather rusty tools, and he was happy with them, going on about how solid they felt.

Then, I unwrapped the only gift from him, which turned out to be a useless light switch. He thought that was the funniest thing ever, but I wasn't laughing.

I'm not mad at him for not buying me a Switch. I am mad at him for making me believe he was getting me one, causing me to miss out on all the deals, and giving me only something he knew would be useless to me. If I want a Switch now, I have to cough up extra money, just so my dad could have a cheap laugh on my behalf.

EDIT: Thanks for the encouragement, everyone! I posted here because I was called "a terrible, ungrateful, spoiled person" as well as entitled over in another subreddit, and it seriously made me wonder if I was somehow in the wrong. Even though this doesn't resolve the situation, at least I feel a fair bit better now

EDIT: Just to make it more clear, he got me a switch to turn lights on and off that you put on the wall, not a Nintendo Switch Lite.

[d... Next year if he asks for more tools, just give him a framed picture of himself. Return the favor. NTA

jb 13 NTA you don't get a joke or gag gift without having a real gift to back it up.
  • 10
BeastRunner22 NTA. You should ask him to borrow the toolset you gave him to install the "switch" and then return it.
  • 11
lala0073 NTA since you could have saved money at the original time, that was a thing for him to do. Maybe he got you one and this is a gag, or are you sure he didn't?

Easthampster NTA. My mother used to do this to me and my father all the time. "Don't but that, I'll get it for your birthday/Xmas/literally any other gift giving holiday". Never mind if that occasion is another 4 months away.
  • 13
We would wait for ages, miss out on sales and generally anticipate getting the whatever, so we wouldn't ask for much else. Then holiday rolls around and she never bought the whatever, because it was "too expensive/l couldn't find it/you don't need it".

It's not about wanting to be gifted something that you didn't get. It's about someone controlling what you buy, under the guise of (false) generosity. The fact that it was a joke at your expense just adds to hurt of the the manipulation.

djternan NTA You should buy a child's toy set of tools, take all of the nice real tools out of the toolbox you got him, and replace them with the toy ones. Then sell the real ones and buy yourself a Nintendo Switch. He likes jokes so he'll get a kick out of that.
