Throwing a party and informing all your guests that it is 'adults only' because you don't want kids to attend, is completely fair and up to you. It is also completely fair and up to your guests to refuse the invitation, especially if they have kids who are forbidden from attending the party.
If you cannot understand that a rule like that would minimize your guest list, then maybe you should reconsider the rule.
That is what I would have said to the brother in this Reddit story, who got upset with his sister for missing his 50th birthday party. The reason the sister failed to arrive at the party, was because it was an 'adults only' party, and she has 4 little kids, including 8 months old twins. She didn't have an available babysitter for the party, and she didn't want to leave her husband alone with all 4 kids, so she had to pass on her brother's invitation. That did not sit well with the brother, who claimed she should have at least come to the party for an hour or so.
