Boss won't fire somebody who's stealing from us
  • 03
I live in an At Will employment state so my boss (The Owner) could fire him at any moment. I'll keep this brief. We had money come up missing and it was
  • 04
pretty easy to figure out it was him, especially with the cameras. It wasn't a small amount of money either.
  • 05
I came to my boss about it and showed him the footage but instead of firing him my Boss told me as the manager I was responsible for realizing it was
  • 06
gone sooner so me and him would split the cost and pay it back to him. It was but I didn't say anything because I felt at fault for not realizing the money was gone sooner...
  • 07
Well it happened again. This time I noticed right away and showed my boss everything from the missing money and cash slips to the camera footage where you can see him hide the money.
  • 08
My boss isn't firing him and is giving him another chance to pay back the money (the money isn't even paid back from the first time.) I'm mainly pi 1 not just
  • 09
because he cost me money, but because I'm the one that has to worry and stress when he's there working. Why my boss won't fire him or let me fire him is beyond
  • 10
me. He doesn't even do his job and has started throwing chairs when I write him up or correct him on anything

Ratzink 2d ago Pretty sure your boss can't take your money to pay for the mistake of another employee. I'm not a lawyer but you should talk to one about that and brush up your resume. Find a better job.

Valuable_Ad_973 OP • 2d ago I'm the manager, and this employee when hired was going to be the assistant manager, so we were both given the safe code. He was never promoted because hes an idiot, but That's why we both have to pay it back, we were the 2 with safe access and the camera footage wasn't definitive

HotRodHomebody • 2d ago depending on your state, it may be illegal to force employees to pay for any shortages, missing product, errors made, short of criminal acts. There's no way that you owe the money in any scenario. Absolute
  • 14
nonsense. this is called misplaced loyalty, and you are holding yourself responsible for something that is out of your control. Ditch that place and find a job that treats you properly. The fact that they are going to keep
  • 15
someone who steals on staff and give them another opportunity is mind blowing. that just means he's going to steal again, whether he gets caught or not.

Valuable_Ad_973 OP • 2d ago I moved here with nothing. Didn't even have a car or a real place to live. I've worked here close to a year and everything I have, including all my friends is because of this job, I don't just wanna leave.
  • 17
Besides that there's no other jobs around, and my car is on its last limbs, I bought a cheap vehicle to get me around for awhile but I still can't afford a nicer one so I'm limited on job options

Striking-Garbage-810 • 2d ago If you eat this sandwich you're only supporting this leadership. You have managerial experience. Go be a manager somewhere else. You don't owe your boss/company a thing. d

Pristine_Serve5979 • 2d ago Why is it so easy for him to access the money? Take away the key.
  • 20
Valuable_Ad_973 OP • 2d ago Well he knows the safe combo, and we have a cash register he has to get in to do his job. This last time he took money out of the register
  • 21
sockscollector • 2d ago It's the owners money, he needs to handle it his way, pick your battles wisely
  • 22
Previous_Soil_5144 • 2d ago No. Your boss is NOT making you pay for this. He can fire you if he wants, but he ain't taking a penny off your pay for this.
  • 23
If he wants the money back he can call the police and report a theft like a normal person. That would mean he would have to work and deal with this, so he'd rather just put it on someone else and avoid any legal proceedings.
  • 24
Economy Care1322 • 2d ago Well empty the safe then pay back half of what you took.
  • 25
. Open-Resist-4740 • 2d ago Ya, your boss cannot take your money to pay for another employee stealing. That's just an empty threat, and a dumb one at that. If they try to garnish you wages, sue them for theft of wages, or flat out theft, or both.
  • 26
Desperate-Pear-860 • 2d ago You're the manager, call the cops, show them the evidence. They'll arrest him and you won't have to put up with him any more.
  • 27
Ratzink 2d ago Oh. Still brush up your resume and get a better job.
  • 28
Valuable_Ad_973 OP • 2d ago I live in a very very small town and there's not very many jobs within a 10 mile radius any direction. My car is on its last life. I'm also young, and this management position will look great on a resume if i can hold it longer. I'm just pd and don't understand why he won't just fire this dude
  • 29
Super Rob 1d ago . If you're the manager, why aren't YOU firing him?
  • 30
Valuable_Ad_973 OP • 1d ago Because I can't just FIRE anybody, without PERMISSION, from my BOSS, the OWNER...
