wtf facts - Text - Plants have sexual organs. Whenever you touch its pollen, you're touching the precursor of the plant sperm cell (like spermatogonia if you know a bit of biology) The fruit you eat are the ovaries of the plant that they came from. EDIT: Specifically flowers. The flowers themselves contain both the male and female organs.

wtf facts - Text - We're sitting on a rock flying through space at an incredibly high rate of speed Imagine driving down an unlit highway late at night with no headlights going as fast as your car can go. Now take your hands off of the wheel, that is what we are all doing right now.

wtf facts - Text - Look at your hands. A significant percentage of the atoms that make up your hands (and everything else in your body) were forged in the heart of stars, which then exploded. We, as in our atoms, were not in the stars, much as we were the stars themselves. We're all remnants of long dead stars. Stars like our Sun are pretty much our grandchildren. We were stars.. And then we were supernovas. It's funny to realize that our bodies were once pieces of something that.... overwhelmin

wtf facts - Text - Astronomer here! No matter how good we get in sky surveys to detect asteroids, there is no way to detect one that comes from the direction of the sun that is about to hit Earth. The best example of this is the 2013 Russian meteorite. Frankly right now if we discovered an asteroid set to hit in the next year we really couldn't do much about it, despite what science fiction says. And no, you can't it up in the modern world the way astronomical discoveries are reported.

If/when the "big one" finally comes, the whole west coast of the United States will basically be torn to shreds with magnitude 8+ earthquakes in areas that are ridiculously ill- prepared for earthquake related emergencies. Edit: Apparently I need to point out, I know what "overdue" means for earthquakes. I never said "this is going to happen soon, everybody panic." I just find this scenario a lot scarier

wtf facts - Text - The scale of the universe, and its emptiness, yet how much there is out there, are both insane. It's terrifying yet amazing at the same time. Take a square millimeter, or basically a grain of sand, place a meter (or about a yard, or 3 feet) away from you. If there wasn't anything blocking your view, that grain of sand would be covering thousands of entire galaxies from your view. This is what the Ultra Deep Field from Hubble represents. The light from those galaxies took so mu

wtf facts - Text - This is more of a theory, but true and false vacuums. The theory suggests that the universe is a false vacuum, and if a true vacuum was to occur it would change all the false vacuum around it to a true vacuum, propagating outwards at the speed of light. This could happen at random, and could change the fundamental laws of the universe. This might already have happened, but we have no idea of knowing until it reaches us, which it may very well never do before the universe dies.
