Employers often will downplay your contributions, whether consciously or subconsciously, instead attributing the company's success to their own management and operations. Consequently, when it comes to talking salary, they'll think they have the upper hand, and only after you leave will they begin to realize their mistake—even then, they might just find some other way to cope with their declining sales and business.
