It's unfortunate that some animals will never get the opportunity to be mascots because they aren't intimidating enough. Think of the kinds of animals often chosen as team mascots: tigers, lions, bears, panthers, and eagles. They all have reputations for being dangerous predators that other teams should fear, whether the actual team is fearsome or not. If things had gone a little differently in colonial times, I like to think that the Philadelphia Eagles would now be the Philadelphia Doves or the Philadelphia Turkeys. But those aren't birds of prey, so they made bad threatening symbols for nations and football teams. I would cheer for the Carolina House Cats just as fiercely as the Carolina Panthers, possibly even more, because the former name is much funnier. Alas, goldfish, ants, starfish, snails, squirrels, frogs, and deer likely will never become the symbols of major league athletic greatness. If you would root for the Kansas City Chihuahua, these animal memes are right up your alley.
