If you're anything like me, you love birthdays, celebrating your own and others'. It's a joyous occasion to reflect on how far you've come and think about where you want to go. But for this young woman, her birthday was tarnished by one of the few people who should have been making it special, her dad. After all, we literally wouldn't be here without our parents, so you'd think they'd celebrate your birthday like it was their own. You did make them parents, after all.
For this teenager, her dad seemed determined to make things difficult from the start. From broken promises to putting her celebration on hold while he spent time with his other kids, he really missed the mark. Thankfully, there's mom, always there to support you, back you up, and save the day. Go Mom! Girlhood is already hard enough as it is. Despite the setbacks, mom comes to the rescue, saving the birthday with the ultimate NYC trip. But, of course, dad swoops in again, this time as the ultimate buzzkill. He tries to force her to attend a funeral for an aunt she barely had a relationship with… on her birthday, no less. The drama is off the charts. No wonder these parents got divorced. The real question now is, to New York or not to New York?
