40 Hours of Sick Time Per Year Is A Joke

It's January 4th. I have norovirus. I've already missed two days of work this year. I work 12 hour shifts.
  • 04
I am now down to 16 hours of sick time with basically a full 12 months left in the year. Once my sick time is depleted, I'm allowed two absences, on the third I'm fired. It doesn't matter that I've worked here for 14 years. It doesn't matter that I'm a good employee. Everything is "by the book", no exceptions.

Until last year, my company accepted doctor's note and would not penalize you for being out of work once your sick time was depleted. They no longer accept them. It doesn't matter if your doctor says you have

Your only option now is FMLA. I've seen multiple employees fired last year, because their doctor's wouldn't fill out the FMLA forms.

And I don't blame the doctor's, they have their own rules to follow and don't want to open themselves up to issues. Not to mention (and I'm not anti-doctor), many of them can't be bothered. It's one thing to have their office staff input dates and symptoms

into a boilerplate note and then sign it, it's another to fill out a 3 or 4 page form over something as simple as the flu or food poisoning or whatever. Doctor's and nurses are incredibly overworked these days. I know the majority would have no problem filling out FMLA for people who seriously need it, but they don't have the time to fill it out for random bulls....

I think a lot of them don't fully grasp how ridiculous corporations have gotten these days.

I had to bring a "Return to Work" form to my doctor yesterday, because even though I have sick time, if we are out two days, a doctor has to fill out the company's "Return to Work" form.
  • 13
My doctor was literally flabbergasted. He said to me, "Why do they need this? I gave you a note stating you are fit to return to work on 1/6?"
  • 14
I have no clue, but they won't allow me to work unless you fill out their "official company form." Ask our new HR team that hired two years ago after the company wiped out everyone in HR who had worked there for decades.

e-7604 Whoa, this is insane. The pressure of this bone-headed policy will ensure you are sick MORE often since your coworkers will be forced to co-mingle MORE germs.

I had norovirus for 5 days. I couldn't hold down water, it ran through me in 20 minutes. On the fifth day I fainted, fell off the toilet and hurt my knee, back and hip when I landed in a contorted mess smashed up against the wall. So I guess by your company's standard I would already be fired. I am just flabbergasted by this, I'm a human, damnit!

Aurora 1717 They started a points system for attendance at my job. It becomes very punitive very quickly. We don't have sick leave, so you have to use a limited PTO bank to cover absences. As a result everyone started coming into work sick and infecting each other.

Atlanta_Mane Sounds like everyone should get sick on the same day and force them to fire everyone. SICK OUT!

stormchaotic1 My doctor has a month + wait time. If I actually needed immediate assistance, I'm better off with urgent care and I don't know if they'd fill that stuff out. I do agree 40 hours isn't enough though. I've had an awful cold for the past week and can barely talk which makes a call center job basically impossible but can't afford to use all the time off now.

Puzzleheaded Elk2440 Corporate America at its finest. We are just cattle to them. We don't even have sick time where I am unless you live in a state where it's law to provide it.

Yes, this means some of our employees have sick leave in addition to PTO and everyone else doesn't get sick leave. Same amount of PTO given per check. So basically we get less paid time because we don't get sick days mandated by our state. We are also forced to use PTO if we call out.

amarchy If you have two young kids you will also use your 10 days of PTO staying home while they are sick. American work culture is set up this way for a reason. They wont change policies, they just want the women not working and at home with the kids.

my_clever-name Come to work sick. Meet with HR in person. Multiple times while sick. Meet in person with the boss. Be sure to ask for tissues. Ask for the wastebasket and keep it near you, just in case. Excuse yourself often for restroom breaks. Try to stay away from your coworkers. Someone in the past probably abused the prior policy.
