Upon first seeing this tweet, I questioned whether it was real or fake. After all, pretending that Rainforest Cafe is selling a Harambe shirt sounds like something someone would do to create a viral moment. When I investigated further, I discovered that this is a real shirt that is being sold on the Rainforest Cafe website.

It's kind of strange that 2016 is being romanticized as a time one would like to return to after waking up from the dream. The past 10 years have been objectively wild, but I'm old enough to remember that in 2016, everyone was talking about 2016 as if it were the worst year in modern history. The events of 2020 definitely put the passing of Harambe, Carrie Fisher, David Bowie, and Prince into perspective.

It's easy to be confused about the continued popularity of a meme this old. What is it about Harambe that has made him stand the test of time? Why is he more fondly remembered than his contemporaries, like D*** Daniel? After years in the meme industry, I've come to learn that there are some tells that, in the moment, predict which memes are destined to become legendary. If a meme resonates with a large part of the population emotionally, it's more likely to become a meme remembered than a meme that makes you laugh for a second. Nobody would care about Harambe if his story hadn't been presented to the internet as an ironic tragedy we all needed to be invested in and never forget.

If you are committed to repping the memes of yesteryear, and you're going to march on down to your local Rainforest Cafe to pick up this shirt, my hat goes off to you! As for me, I'm going to stick with modern meme trends and rep my bootleg Ballerina Cappuccina shirt I got on the Wildwood, New Jersey boardwalk.
