If there's one thing we can all agree about family, it's that it's unprecedentedly unpredictable and everyone has issues there. I was even talking with a friend last night, and she said she feels envious of people who have great relationships with their parents. I told her that although some people have better relationships with their parents than others, that at the end of the day everyone has issues with their parents, family members, and that no one's family is perfect. People may feel ashamed of those imperfections, and feel the need to hide it, to put on a persona of having the "perfect life." But truly, no one's family is perfect. And in fact, it's usually the most perfect on the outside that are the strangest and most unhealthy on the inside.

So don't be deceived by appearances. In the story below, there's no deception at play. The protagonist has a long history of discomfort and disrespect coming from an older brother of his, presumably the middle child. Why do middle children suffer so much? The protagonist's brother does seem extremely problematic. What kind of extreme reaction is that? It's so uncomfortable to have people like that intimately close to you. Like everything you do or say gets shut down, you can't even comfortably speak to them about anything. It's horrible.

He's really a nightmare person. He approaches everything defensively and aggressively. I had a roommate once like that. If I brought up anything to her she would tell me it's my problem. It makes you feel caged and trapped, it's such a bad energy and he has every right not to apologize.
