Some people are birthday people. Meaning that when they have a birthday, they get really jazzed about it and plan a big thing. They want to make it exciting and fun, they want it to be special and meticulously planned out. For my last birthday party, I planned a night in with my friends where we made curry and just enjoyed each other's company. None of my friends have any children right now, but if they did I would 100% make my birthday party an "adults only" event. There's no reason to have children there unless you really love kids. Plus, it's only a birthday. It's not a crazy life event like a wedding or something. There's birthday's every year. It's not crucial that it should be that special of a day. 

That's not what the people in the story below thought. The protagonist is having a birthday party, and tells her friends it's child-free, which is totally understandable. One friend in particular didn't exactly feel the need to respect the birthday girl's wishes, and showed up with her daughter, causing a stir at the restaurant.
