Jealousy among siblings is an inevitable thing. There is simply no way parents can satisfy all their children equally, without at least one kid feeling like they got the shorter end of the stick. They will always look at their siblings thinking the grass is greener, and will probably always blame their parents for allowing that to happen.

The only thing parents can do to deal with jealousy, is to educate their kids in a way that will have them understand that they simply can't always get what they want (cue The Rolling Stones).

How can parents pull that off?

Well, they can start by ensuring their kids would not always get the same stuff. As tempting as it can be, maybe try not giving your kids the same gift on Christmas, or the same clothes when you go out shopping. It is also okay for one kid to be rewarded for something good they've done, without the other children tagging along to the party.

Sure, there's bound to be backlash at the moment, but for the long run, it could teach them a really valuable lesson.

That is the approach the father in the story below had when he wrote it. He describes a situation in which his daughter went to a much-feared dentist appointment, and as a reward, he took her out for ice cream afterwards. However, when they returned home, the other kids were mad that they didn't get ice cream as well.
The father stood behind his actions of only getting the daughter the reward, but the mom thought it was pretty unfair of him to ‘pick favorites’.
