It actually started with Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, beauty, and fertility, and her son Eros, whose Roman name is better known as Cupid. There was a mortal woman, Psyche, whose beauty and charm paralleled the beauty of Aphrodite. Through her jealousy over the mortal woman she sentenced her son Eros to prick her with one of his devious arrows and put an ugly man in front of her, thus forcing her to fall in love with him, halting all suitors from admiring her, making them fall back into the arms of Aphrodite. He's stunned by Psyche's beauty and misses, and thus makes himself fall madly in love with her, much to his mother's disdain.
