    "Gave notice, got fired"

I've seen this phenomenon. discussed in social media but didn't think it would happen to me. I gave notice to my direct supe and offered to stay until they hire my

replacement. It took the company months to find me, and I know the economy is about to collapse, so I'm not in a rush to be jobless. Anyway, I offered to stay,
  • 04
thinking I'd have a month or two to job hunt and wind things down. But later that day my supe says the company has
  • 05
decided to accept my resignation effective immediately. Feels good to be done, but still, uncool.

ETA: my spouse makes a good living, and I'm really fond of my children. When my employer would not allow me to reduce my weekly hours, we agreed I would
  • 07
need to choose between the job and my family. Easy choice. I don't regret giving notice. It was just odd to be living the meme.
  • 08
I don't have a ton of savings, per se, but what I do have is a very particular set of recession-proof skills.

Hedgehog-Dapper What job did you have?
  • 10
    Opening Watercress56 OP A management job I would've kept for 25k more.
  • 11
cmhopkins7443 Yeah...they don't do "notice" anymore. The job market for employers is spectacular, so they think they are going to easily find your replacement.
  • 12
Opening Watercress56 OP I wish them good luck. You should see the changes they made to the job description for my replacement. Changes based on all the stuff I brought to the position.
  • 13
BoogerSugarSovereign Why would you give notice before getting a new job? You exposed yourself to a predictable risk and got burnt.
  • 14
Opening Watercress56 OP Without getting too specific, childcare.

dgeniesse Since you resigned will you be able to get unemployment?
  • 17
Opening Watercress56 OP I think so, but I had an interview yesterday that sounds promising. We'll see.

Earth Sorcerer97 It's a sign.....a very good sign you resigned. Hope your next job treats you better.

Sufficient_Tooth_949 I think quitting on the day of, has become alot more normalized this past decade, my last two jobs I just kept quiet worked my normal shift, then clocked out and sent a text to the manager it would be my last day
  • 20
Id only give notice if i have a genuinely good connection with management and I enjoyed my time with the company
  • 21
Muskratisdikrider this is why it should be normalized not to give notice. they don't offer you a severance or give you two weeks when they fire you.

flxcoca Turned in my two week vacation notice on a Friday afternoon for the following two weeks. Attached with a memo that said my vacation notice also serves as my two weeks notice and I would be retiring immediately
  • 23
after my vacation. My boss looked at me and said, so, when is your last day? I looked at my watch and said in 20min, after I say my farewells to some of the staff.
  • 24
themadnader If an employer doesn't let you work out your notice then you should be eligible for unemployment, and I would HIGHLY recommend you do SO.
  • 25
Mojojojo3030 Tell your colleagues so they know to quit without notice in the future
  • 26
defythevenu It's a phenomenon that only happens with rly c.....py companies that don't value their employees. Hopefully your next role will be at a company that isn't as unprofessional as this company was. Glad you left!
