If the mother-in-law doesn't like to see it, then she can leave the room. Why should her DIL be discreet in the comfort of her own home? It's a crazy request to make, especially since she's a mother herself, and knows the shame people give her for simply trying to feed her newborn and be a good mother.

Mother-in-law accuses DIL of indecency when she feeds her newborn in front of her, DIL tells her off: “If you don’t like it you can leave”
The relationship between a MIL and DIL is never straightforward. If you're someone that has a decent relationship with your MIL, bio mom, or step-mother, then you could consider yourself lucky. It's really not common, and no matter the dynamic, there will always be points of tension in the relationship. Imagine that you were in her position, it must be impossible to not see the DIL as a sort of child of theirs in some way. They're married to their son, meaning that you can be happy for them, and simultaneously worried constantly about the relationship, and hopeful that your son and his wife have a good relationship themselves. It's not easy to let go of those worries.
In the story below, the protagonist is a woman with a somewhat rocky relationship with her MIL. After having her first child, she does what any normal mother does: she tries to feed her newborn baby in the comfort and privacy of her own home. Her MIL doesn't feel like it's appropriate, however.
