  • I work at a company that proudly advertises "unlimited PTO" as a perk. Sounds great, right? But in the two years I've been here, I've only taken 6

  • sebwiers It is a scam. Not just for the reasons you mentioned, but because the original reason to do it is just an accounting trick.
  • PTO is an earned benefit that accumulates as a payroll credit. Outstanding payroll must be covered as cash deposits. If they give "unlimited pto" they don't have to carry any additional payroll so have more liquid cash.
  • If they award PTO and stop people from using it (which they are gonna do either way) then they eventually have to pay it out. If they just allow "ulimited PTO" they don't have to pay any PTO.

  • fairkatrina Unlimited can totally be a scam. My last company had unlimited PTO with a minimum requirement to take off each year, and that's the only kind I trust. Where I am now I have to earn my hours and it suuuuuucks.
  • Siege089 I have unlimited PTO, I use 4-5wks a year, it's about the company culture to make this work. Otherwise it's just to save money.
  • Everyoneheresamoron Your job doesn't offer Unlimited PTO, it offers guilt and paranoia combined with overworking.
  • If someone ever offers you "unlimited", tell them you are going to take 1. 1 - 2 weeks in the summer (14 days straight)
  • 2. 3 day weekends starting in December, ending in the end of January (either mondays or fridays) 8 - 10 days
  • 3. All Holidays, and holiday adjacent days (Like the friday after thanksgiving, or days around christmas) (7 days not including the holidays) so 21 days total
  • 4. Labor day is a 6 day holiday (6 days) 5. Every month you get 1 Mental Health day (12 days)
  • If they think thats too much PTO then you don't actually have unlimited PTO you have guilt ridden PTO and you basically don't have any.
