Having children is not a decision that comes lightly. In our modern, Western society, it's just kind of the thing to "do," but do people actually stop and wonder if they truly want children? It's not something to just decide because everyone else is doing it. You're putting a human life on the earth, and you're going to be its sole caretaker until you pass away. I have so many male friends of various ages that in the past seemed "older" to have children. Though they can of course have kids biologically, sometimes it doesn't seem fair to the child that they would have to grow up with the "old" parent. Imagine them getting picked up from elementary school, and their father or mother is ancient compared to the others. It's not simply about aesthetics, it's about the fact that the older one gets, the less capable and interested in decent parenting they become. 

Imagine trying to hike with your kid, or take them on trips, or teach them things like riding a bike. Everything becomes harder to do the older you get, and it may not be nice to leave your kid as an orphan so early in life because of your age difference. 

In the story below, the narrator is a woman whose husband has children from his previous marriage. When he started dating the narrator, they agreed that she would never be expected to be a mother to them. That is until he is in a bind and needs someone to…babysit.
