There are only two types of couples: those that like to sit next to each other at restaurants and those who prefer to sit across from each other. Most people that I know like sitting next to their boyfriend or girlfriend. That's understandable; it is certainly the more intimate seating arrangement. However, I like to sit across from my fiance; I love seeing him enjoy his food, and we're both massive yappers, so we both prefer to be face-to-face for a conversation. The only exception to this is when one side of the table has a chair and the other is a booth – in this case we both sit on the cushiony booth together.

The worst seating arrangement for couples might be one where they are completely separated by unpleasant family members. In our story today, a woman's potential mother-in-law physically inserts herself between her son and his girlfriend, humilating her in front of all of his family and friends. When he sides with his mom, our protagonist knows that it's time to run for the hills.

The biggest red flag is that he's not even remotely embarrased that his mother was trying to hard to fight for his attention with his girlfriend. This is totally normal behavior to him.
