So I (29F) recently attended a family gathering for first time in years because I live out of state and, well, I prefer peace. While catching up with some extended relatives, this distant cousin, who I swear I've only met once when I was like 12, corners me in the kitchen.

She goes, You don't have any kids yet, right? I respond by saying no, she furthers asks if I was married, I reply with same as the first. She lights up like she just won the lottery and hits me with.
  • 04
Well, then you should help contribute to my wedding fund! You've had no major expenses like a baby or a husband, so it's only fair. I thought she was joking, but nope she de d serious.

Starts telling me her venue costs, the dress she wants, and how just a few thousands from each well off cousin would help so much. Mind you, I don't even have this woman's number saved.
  • 07
I laughed awkwardly and told her I wasn't in a position to fund someone else's life choices. She goes on to tell me how I'm single and I really do not really have what I spend serious money on.

Rent, Bills, Therapy, Cat food? Doesn't matter. Apparently my uterus hasn't been used properly, so my wallet is now public property. Safe to say I left early, with my money and my sanity cos I was almost losing my mind.

GenericMale Nurse918 Ladies, are you using your uterus properly? No? Allow me to show you funding options for my summer vacation.
  • 11
iamarddtusr You should have told her that you don't have the money to give as you have spent it just recently on buying a holiday home in Belize and a Porsche 911.

Myrag Sarcasm is always nice, but sometimes a simple ,,no" is the best answer to a bizarre request like this. Just no, no extras, simple, plain, no negotiations.
  • 13
iamarddtusr Agree, sarcasm or a simple no. Never an explanation, that isn't owed to anyone who isn't super close.
  • 14
PoetLucy I read that as therapy for the cat. A better investment than the cousin!!
  • 15
i-am-pepesilvia89 Maybe her future husband could contribute?
  • 16
Pyehole She's already got plans for the money that her future husband has.
  • 17
9lobaldude Indeed Also OPs answer should be "I'll think about it"
  • 18
ridik_ulass I'd have 100% said "you know what, you should marry someone with money" just wobble the pry bar in their relationship a bit, not too much pressure, just enough that she stews on it and he becomes a lightning rod for her frustrations later.

I_aim_to_sneeze Idk how much more distant than meeting them 2 times in 29 years can really get, honestly.

    ladyrara Make it none...

bloodsoed Got married at the local courthouse. Been married 12 great years today. A good marriage doesn't need an expensive wedding.

PeorgieTirebiter I doubt you'll be invited to the wedding but just in case you are, be sure to decline by telling her you'll be taking a lavish overseas vacation on that date.
