'Poor kitty had been in her carrier for hours'

This past week we moved across the country. The kitty and I flew to our new home. We had multiple delays but little angel soldiered on in her carrier despite the extra time. She was very patient and brave.

Finally boarded our second flight to our final destination and just as the cabin doors closed, a lady came up to the front of the plane and began harassing one of the flight attendants. I paid extra for early boarding (Southwest), so I was at the front of the plane and witnessed the interaction from a few feet away.

The passenger loudly and rudely said to the flight attendant "I overheard someone say that there's a cat on this flight". My heart sank. It was late at night, poor kitty had been in her carrier for hours on end, all I wanted was to get home (as I'm sure every single other person aboard did too).

The flight attendant said she wasn't sure about that, and asked if there was a problem. This woman then went into a diatribe about her severe cat allergies and insinuated that the FA was obligated to tell her if there were "animals on the plane".

At that point other passengers at the front were starting to eyeroll at this scene and the delay. There was no way I was getting off that plane so I half stood in my seat, stuck my hand up and said "yes, that's me, I'm traveling with my cat tonight." She glanced at me for half a second and turned back

to the FA, continuing to say she wasn't comfortable traveling with a cat on board. I believe her words were "my needs should take priority over a cat, for god's sake".

I asked her where she was sitting, (back of the plane). I had to say 'excuse me, ma'am' like 3 times to get her attention. I said "my cat will be in her carrier the entire flight as per Southwest policy, there's no chance of her being closer to you than she is right now, these planes have HEPA

filters and in any case she barely sheds. Are you comfortable with that?" She made up an excuse about how most people "take them out of the carrier and let them roam all over the place" (no one does that) and she apologized - to the flight attendant, not to me. Didn't acknowledge me at all.

I kid you not, she started fake sneezing as she walked back to her seat.

I know this is a pretty niche circumstance but I'm interested to hear your thoughts. Did she make a valid point? Was it my responsibility to accommodate her? My instinct says no - cat allergies are not life threatening except in exceedingly rare asthma cases; and I'm pretty sure you'd have to be huffing dander, even then. Sigh.

willdanceforpizza There were reasonable steps that lady could take. Like another post already stated - take more meds. And they could wear a mask - like a K94 or N95. If I had been on your flight and witnessed that interaction I would have given her a mask.

Moving is a lot of work. Moving across the country is even more so. Love on your kitty. You did everything you could have in that situation.

Tipitina62 "The passenger loudly and rudely said to the flight attendant "I overheard someone say that there's a cat on this flight" This tells us all we need to know. She did not approach the FA because she was in any sort of medical distress.

Just hearing there was a cat on the flight gave her a reason to complain and try to exert control. Hope you and kitty had a pleasant trip afterwards.

7625607 It's not your place to accommodate her. It's the airline's responsibility to accommodate passengers with allergies. You were within your rights to have your cat in the carrier.

Neat-Illustrator7303 Does she also complain when someone who owns a cat and has hair on their shirt sits near her in a restaurant or on a bus? NTA, the world is full of allergens.

sonia72quebec I'm allergic to cats and... I'm also volunteering at a cat shelter (I also have asthma). I'm always prepared, with medication and my inhaler. That lady clearly overreacting. If she was sitting next to you I could understand asking to change places but what she was asking was totally unreasonable.

Minimum-Guess-4... Severe cat allergies, but has no visible symptoms and literally marches right up to where the animal is. I think someone has severe main character syndrome, not severe allergies.

DD854 I flew with my late kitty a few times and was always afraid of this. My understanding of United's policy is the burden is on the passenger with the allergy to alert the airline and they can switch seats or flights if necessary. You didn't do anything wrong!
