Getting a kitten made me realize how much I had been "neglecting" my older cat.

First off, please no hate, Jack Jack has an amazing, spoiled life and I was not truly neglecting him. That being said, my interactive play time with him really decreased as he got older (he is 6.5 years). After

getting our new kitten and really spending a lot of time playing with her, I noticed Jack joining in. He was so happy. So now I spend more time playing with wand toys with him and I have noticed him becoming more energetic and overall happier. I feel

terrible letting something so simple fall by the wayside because he was getting older. I am happy little Pie-O-My was able to remind me how important play is for cats of all ages. I

guess I do not really have a main point to this post, other than don't forget older kitties, while calmer, still crave that play time.

nepenthe154 ⚫ Top 1% Commen... I don't think it was "neglect" per se. Cats calm down and stop playing as much when they reach adulthood. You were seeing him mature. He probably felt okay with his life. Now that there's a kitten it gives him reason to play again.

Part of this is luck, too. Not all cats respond well to a kitten. You have a loving boy and I'm glad this worked out for you. Pet them nice for me. 6.9K > Reply

chunkermonkers OP ⚫ He is the bestest boy. He lost his brother earlier this year and I could tell he was hurting. Jack loves her and snuggles with her all the time. They have both been given lots of pets for you! ◇ Reply 2.8K

chunkermonkers OP ⚫ Also, I was surprised how well he responded to her. I've only ever had orange, male cats. So getting a female, non-orange cat was a big change for me as well. I'm so happy that they are happy. 408 ◇ Reply

Valahn⚫ My older girl still liked play even after 5-6 years, but the amount she wanted to play lessened a ton after year 4. When we finally managed to get a companion for her, her play and excitement definitely perked up for about the first two years of the kittens life before she calmed back down. She much rather flop over and bathe in the pets most days.

I do think the kitten energy really triggers something instinctual, whether that's trying to teach the young one or the fact that activity alone is stimulating, especially with extra movement. Of course, our hope is always that our kitties are having fun :3

xKittyKattxx⚫ Yep. I agree 100% with this. My 8 year old tortie stopped playing a few years ago. Then she had kittens who are all around 3 years old now. When she sees me playing with them, I was surprised that she also started playing. So now I play with all of them and try to engage her more to keep her active and engaged, and so she never feels left out
