Entitled Coworker Insists I Change Vacation Days Because Her "Trip Is More fun than mine"

"Mine is a real vacation with more fun than yours."

At my work place we have to ask for vacation time months in advance at work because only a certain number of people can be off at a time. I booked a week of vacation for a family reunion first time we've all been together in years.

Along comes Karen, who obviously didn't plan ahead and now wants to take the exact same week off for a Cancun trip with her friends. When she finds out I already had that week approved, she asks me to cancel mine.
  • 05
I laughed first because I thought she was kidding. She wasn't. She said: "Well, it's just a family thing, right? Mine is a real vacation with more fun than yours. I already told everyone I'm going." I told her "Yeah, and I already booked flights. Months ago."
  • 06
She didn't like that answer and actually tried to guilt- trip me in front of other coworkers, saying I was being selfish and wrecking her "once-in-a-lifetime" trip. (Side note: she goes on at least 3 vacations a year.)

When I wouldn't budge, she went to our manager and complained. Luckily, my boss wasn't stupid and said no if she wanted the time off that badly, she should have given advance notice. She pouted for days and gave me the cold shoulder. All over vacation days.

Boring_Emotion7813 Tell her you will sell her your time off. Your airplane tickets times 10.

_annalyn_ Glad to hear that the boss backed the op. Some people really need a reality check and a calendar app.
  • 11
theatot_OP Yeah my boss is wise.
  • 12
RedDazzlr Plus time and a half for the vacation hours being sacrificed for her. Plus a convenience fee and a tip is heavily encouraged.
  • 13
DepartmentFamous2355 I don't understand why people choose to entertain people like her. The answer is no, end of discussion, don't engage unless the next conversation is related to conducting active work.

karendonner Recommendations like this always get huge upvotes but I hope nobody takes them seriously. A normal person is rarely going to do well trying to outcrazy the crazy. ... especially when they have a

chance of making you do what they want by accepting your insane terms, and then once the deal is done, they just laugh and say "holy sh I didn't think you were serious! Who in their right mind would agree to a deal like that?
  • 16
BlindUmpBob Sounds like a win all around. You get to go to your reunion, plus she has to miss her "more fun" trip. Added bonus, she's giving you the silent treatment! If i were you, I'd play the lottery. Good fortune is on your side.
  • 17
NotTheBadOne To me the biggest win of all is the cold shoulder part..her pulling that kind of shady sh is a deal breaker for me... I'd be done with her.

pegasussoaringhigh Oh goody, one of those "Lack of planning on your part does not make an emergency on mine" scenarios. So the level of fun is what gives priority for vacation time? Good that your manager stuck with the rules.

We can't decide between a neon sigh or a cute cursive sign. Only we'd see it and we can't decide which will be funnier to look at when we're dealing with bulls clients.

Man-o-Bronze Going to the Galápagos Islands, or climbing Mount Everest, is a "once in a lifetime vacation." Cancun? Not even close.
  • 24
Resolute Muse Awwwwww, I love it when Karen gives me the silent treatment. It's like getting a work bonus.
  • 25
JohnnySkidmarx You snooze, you lose. Maybe next time Karen will plan her vacation ahead of time.
  • 26
lapsteelguitar I assume that "cold shoulder" means she no longer speaks to you unless required? Consider that a win.
  • 27
strywever She is not endearing herself to her boss with this behavior. Rest comfortably in that knowledge.
