I'm not really sure why these two things can't be separate events. Don't most people celebrate with their friends and family separately?

Mom completely takes over adult son's birthday plans despite wife wanting to plan a small, intimate celebration, he refuses to stand up to her despite preferring wife's plans: "It's about making him feel loved by me"
Everyone celebrates their birthday differently. Some people love being the center of attention, hosting, and meticulously crafting themed events that take months to plan. What better excuse to throw a huge party centered around yourself than on your birthday? Others prefer to only vaguely acknowledge their special day — perhaps they'd be down to eat a nicer-than-usual dinner with their partner, if anything. I think most people, though, are somewhere in the middle. A couple of close friends, some laughs, maybe a cake.
In our story today, a wife tries to plan a birthday party for her husband. Knowing that he likes a more low-key and relaxed vibe, she intends to host a small event with his closest friends. However, when his mother catches wind of the plans, she demands to be a part of the brainstorming process. However, mom's idea of a celebration is not in line with our protagonist's vision for the party.
