AITAH for calling the person who ganked a slice of my sister's baby shower cake from the office fridge a selfish garbage human?

"Someone carved out a slab the size of Texas"

Sister's shower is this Saturday. I splurged on a custom pastel cake with little rubber duckies and her name in pink frosting. Picked it up before my

morning shift and parked it in the communal fridge. Wrote my name on the box, added DO NOT TOUCH in thick Sharpie, even threw in a smiley so I didn't look like a total psycho.

Lunch break rolls around. I open the fridge, box feels lighter. Lift the lid and surprise, someone carved out a slab the size of Texas. Frosting smeared everywhere, design trashed, eighty five

bucks down the drain. I had even bought this, which had been perfectly placed on top of the cake, where was it now? Thrown onto it and stained with cream and selfishness.

I saw red. Walked into the kitchen and said, loud enough for the cake thief to hear, that whoever did it was a selfish garbage human with zero home training and they could Venmo me the full cost, thanks.
  • 09
Boss overheard, pulled me aside later, called my outburst unprofessional. Now a few coworkers are acting like I'm the drama.

Real talk: was I over the top or is whoever ate that cake the real menace? Who looks at a clearly marked baby shower cake and thinks, free dessert? AITAH?
  • 12
Lower_Group_1171 It was your boss. Someone stole in the office and he's just chillin
  • 13
Cheap Theory1321 yeah I agree, with the boss's reaction id be leaning towards they are the AH who ate it. Venmo your boss the $85 request
  • 14
EmmerdoesNOTrepme Tbh, with that reaction, it may have been the Boss who took it!
  • 15
Default Munchkin Not really, most bosses don't care about lunch room thieves bu absolutely care about an employee screaming in the break room in anger. One is food so doesn't affect him but one is a possible unhinged employee which would.
  • 16
NoPerformance6534 I agree with this one. A quiet but vehement assault on the cake eater is one thing, but raising one's voice and creating a scene is quite another. Practice stealth vengeance in office

reference to stealing cake from a baby, or taking the next step and stealing other items since boundaries are being ignored. TBH, though, outing the thief publicly was a great move, no doubt embarrassing to the culprit.

lovinglifeatmyage Your boss was totally out of line. Have you been to HR to make a formal complaint?
  • 20
pinkduckling Where I work the company is on the hook for anything stolen from an employee. Ask for compensation.
  • 21
Low Temperature9593 NTA. Obviously cake thief is the villain in the story! They knew exactly what they were ruining when they did that and they are indeed a selfish, garbage human.
  • 22
Are there any cameras that might have at least caught them coming and going? I'd go to HR and request they investigate. At least keep them informed of what happened in case your backwards boss or coworkers try to make any trouble for you.

thisisnotmyname17 I would absolutely start looking to work elsewhere. This level of inconsideration indicates somewhere that I couldn't continue to work.

NTA These Avocado_Bombs I don't know how so many people don't have manners/ common decency anymore.
  • 26
Riker_Omega_Three Go to HR Admit to what you said...take your lumps if they want to punish you
  • 27
But make it clear, you want the cost of the cake and the cost of the replacement cake and you want your boss to apologize for not having your back and instead, only caring about your justified outburst Lodge a formal complaint Whatever happens, happens
  • 28
Default Munchkin I can tell you how this goes. OP brought a cake related to her personal life to store in the work fridge. It got eaten. She had an angry tantrum at
  • 29
the office which could be taken as threatening her coworkers. The break room at most offices is not considered a secured space for storing personal belongings especially ones that shouldn't be at work like a cake for a baby shower.
  • 30
They won't reimburse her, the boss is right in telling her not to yell in the office at her coworkers, and they might fire her for the outburst
  • 31
depending on how it was taken and what her coworkers say about it. It'd only take one person saying she seemed unhinged or dangerous for a zero tolerance on workplace violence policy to kick in.
  • 32
Jadaluvr12 NTA, talk to HR and if they don't do anything go to the police. $85 is enough to make it a crime of theft.
