'I thought it was awful that my neighbors let her outside'

I (21F) live next door to a family with 9 cats. These cats roam into my backyard and some of them spend basically all of their time in my yard.
  • 03
One of her cats is very old, has cataracts and is very thin. She used to be very scared of me but I fed her and eventually she began to really like me. Now almost every day, she comes over, rubs herself on me and I pet her and feed her.

I found out a couple months ago that this cat belongs to my neighbor since she told me. I didn't tell her that I knew her cat previously. I thought this cat was a stray since she's so thin and has vision problems. I thought it was awful that my neighbors let her outside since she's literally going blind and ever since I've continued to feed her and pet her whenever I see her.

A few days ago there was a bad storm in my area and the cat happened to be in my yard. I let her in to my catio and brought my cat that doesn't like her inside. My neighbor's cat was very scared from the rain and I pet her for an hour until she calmed down. She stayed in my catio the

entire night even after the rain stopped, sleeping on an old pillow I gave her. I left the door open so she could leave when she was ready. The next morning I woke up to pounding on my door.

I checked my ring doorbell and it was the cat's owner. Before answering, I checked the camera I have in the catio to see if her cat was still there. She wasn't. The camera showed she had jumped the fence back to her house at around 4 AM (it was now 10 AM).
  • 09
I answered the door and my neighbor asked me if I had her cat last night. I told her that I let her cat in my catio because of the storm, but the door was open the whole time so she could leave. The cat's owner began yelling at me that I was stealing her cat and to never interact with

her cats again. I told her I didn't want her cats, I have two of my own, and that she could keep them inside because a few of her cats are massacring the bird population, and the cat I befriended is literally going blind. She got ped at me and said I shouldn't tell her how to "parent" her cats and called me a

under her breath as she left. For the non-Spanish speakers here, calling someone a is like calling them an a h_le. I found out later in the day from another neighbor that she went door to door telling the whole neighborhood that I tried to steal her cat.

I think I could be the ah le because I befriended a cat without asking the owner, and I may have overstepped by telling her to keep her cats inside.

Giant AfricanLand... You're not in the wrong, and here's why. You acted out of kindness. You saw a cat that looked like a stray, thin, frightened, and suffering from cataracts, and you did what most decent people would do: you fed her, showed her affection, and gave her shelter during a dangerous storm. That's compassion, not theft.
  • 15
You didn't keep the cat. You let her into a safe area with the door open, and she left when she was ready. That's clearly not stealing. If you'd locked her inside and refused to return her, that would be another matter. But that's not what happened.

The cat's owner isn't taking proper care of her. Letting an elderly, nearly blind cat wander about unsupervised, especially during bad weather, is irresponsible. You assumed she was a stray, and under the circumstances, that's entirely understandable. Many others would have thought the same.

You don't have to ignore a cat that walks into your garden. This cat chose to spend time with you, and animals usually know who treats them kindly. Stroking and feeding a cat in your own garden doesn't make you a bad person. It just means you care.

You had every right to stand up for yourself. When your neighbour accused you and started spreading rumours, you told her the truth. Suggesting she keep her cats indoors, especially when one is harming wildlife and another is clearly vulnerable, isn't interfering; it's highlighting the risks of her neglect.
  • 19
You could have told her earlier that you'd been spending time with her cat. You didn't have to, but some people are quite possessive over their pets and may react strongly if they feel their boundaries have been crossed. That said, considering the cat's condition and her owner's lack of care, your actions were entirely reasonable.
  • 20
You acted with care and good intentions. Your neighbour, however, seems more focused on saving face than protecting her animals. Let her say what she wants. Your actions show you did the right thing. You're not in the wrong.

Idobeleiveinkarma Tell her to keep her cats off your property if she doesn't want you interacting with them.

Key-Canary-2513 NTA. Keep doing you and next time don't open the door.

Conscious-Car-99... We got our cat from the neighborhood abuela the exact same way - minus the confrontation. She is MUCH happier as an indoor cat and neighbor than she ever was when she was starving on the street!
  • 24
When I went to let the neighbor know several weeks after taking the cat inside (we weren't sure where she had come from as there is such a stray problem around here) she told us "oh, I'd wondered where she'd got off to." Completely unconcerned, and didn't mind that we'd given her a good home.
  • 25
allieadventurer NTA I'd consider reporting her to animal control considering she's not taking good care of them.
  • 26
ZKH15 NTA. You thought the cat was a stray; she was thin, going blind, and always outside. Letting her take shelter during a storm with the door open isn't stealing, it's just being kind.
  • 27
Your neighbour should be more concerned that her senior cat is wandering around alone in bad weather. Nine outdoor cats. causing chaos isn't great, and you just called it like it is. She can gossip, but you didn't do anything wrong. Also, she can gossip all she wants, but the neighbourhood Ring cams don't lie.
  • 28
Miss_Judge_and... NTA. Her cats are always in your yard, but she "never wants you to interact with her cats again". She could be the poster child for 'Crazy Cat Lady' Can't argue with crazy either.
