Many couples stay in a relationship long after they know they should break up, not because they have second thoughts, but because they simply don't want to handle the logistics of breaking up, especially for those who live together.

Breaking up means one must move out; they have to decide who gets to stay, how to divide their belongings, how to handle the financial toll, and when all of that has to happen within a reasonable time frame. It's not as easy as a 'it's not you, it's me' conversation; it's often a months-long operation that requires you to keep in constant contact with someone you basically never want to see again. 

That is why many couples attempt to delay the inevitable, maybe because they are not ready for it, or maybe to push the breakup so it could line up with the end of their lease…
