This is the second time in this story that our protagonist expects her daughter to comfort and validate her when she's in the wrong! The family dynamics here are all warped.

It's obvious he's learned to just avoid and push his mother away because it's the only way to keep her from trampling all over his boundaries.

18-year-old hides from his mother at his graduation when she refuses to stop pressuring him to perform a mother-son dance with her in front of his peers: 'I thought he was just being shy'
I was born and raised in a Latin American household. My parents never spoke anything but Spanish to me – not because they didn't know English, but because they wanted to make sure that I maintained a deep connection with my roots. I know how to prepare yucca, can identify regional accents, and I love boleros. The one area my parents failed in, however, is dance. They never taught me about rhythm. Maybe they just assumed that I would have it in my genetics. On top of that, I never learned the steps to dance salsa, merengue, or even bachata. Consequently, for the longest time, I would sit out most of my family gatherings when it was time to dance; I was simply too embarassed to participate.
In our story today, a young boy is being pressured to dance with his mom at his graduation. She is so pushy and disrespectful of his boundaries that he actually feels the need to hide away to avoid her. She takes the rejection pretty badly, and the whole incident follows the family years after the fact.
