'Keeping them in when they want to go out feels cruel when they are used to spending time outside'

Throwaway account. I have two cats that I wanted to keep indoors, but my household keeps letting them outside. This includes my husband, roommate and 4 year old son. They all let the cats outside either on purpose or on accident.
  • 03
When I tell them i would prefer my cats stay inside they seem to make an effort, but they usually end up letting the cats outside either "on accident" going in and out of the house.

My cats at this point are used to going outside and I am at a point where I have to accept that my household does not respect my wishes and won't make an effort to keep them in. At this point keeping them in when they want to go out feels cruel when they are used to spending time outside. Either way keeping them in seems like a losing battle.

Now when my cats come home i welcome them with food water and shelter and treats. I also try to keep them in, but like I said I am on the losing end of that.

When my neighbor started feeding them they come home less and less and I am honestly starting to feel depr_sed about it. It's gotten to a point where they almost never come home. I tried to ask my neighbor if she would please stop feeding my cats so they would come home to eat, and she even agreed that was best.

My cats started coming home again but this only lasted for a few weeks before she started feeding them again. She also started texting me telling me she was running out of food for her own cats after feeding mine. I left her on read as this made me a little angry given that i had asked her to stop feeding my cats.

Then one day she texted me and said one of my cats was meowing at her door, it was storming outside. I was cooking and didn't see the text until after the storm was over. I poked my head out the door to call her, but she didn't come. So i texted back next time that happens just let her in. She won't come home anymore.

My neighbor got really upset, said she already had a cat and didn't have the space for another one. I told her it's not like i kicked them out, they don't come home anymore. I don't know what to tell you. She said that I shouldn't have had cats if I can't take care of them. AITA?

jemison-gem YTA. If your spouse, roommate, and child all don't respect you, YOU need to do something to change that. Not "accept that they don't respect you" Be a responsible pet owner.
  • 13
Theia222 YTA. If you can't be a responsible pet owner then you should rehome them to someone who can. You and your household can't handle pet ownership. Please give this responsibility to someone else and consider either a pet you can handle or none at all.

SuspiciousCod1090 YTA. Your cat's your problem. You now have cats roaming the neighborhood because you couldn't keep them inside. The cat is not your neighbor's responsibility. Go catch the cat and keep it inside. The adults in your house are as well.

this1weirdgirl The neighbor isn't the problem here, the people letting the cats out are.

Valkrhae ESH. I don't know if you've tried any way besides asking the other ppl in the house not to let your cats out, bc from your post it sounds like that's all you did. But there are multiple other solutions. you can try if you haven't already that don't rely on other ppl, like pet barriers to discourage them from entering certain areas,

invisible fences, or installing a catio so they can get their fix for the outside safely. But if you're just going to throw your hands up and go "welp, they still let the cats out so there's nothing I can do," then it's a bit hypocritical to be upset about what happens to your cat when it's outside bc you're allowing it to happen. Did you even try to go get your cat yourself after the storm

or did you just rely on your neighbor to take care of it? Do you ever try to get your cat back instead of just waiting for it to come back? Have you ever considered the possibility that one day, it may not be able to come back?

Your neighbor's an a h le for texting you about her cat food when it's her choice to feed your cat. Personally, I also think she's an ah le for not letting your cat inside when it's storming but has no issue complaining to you about it. If she wants to feed your cat, then she needs to accept the responsibility that comes with it.

Financial_Bowl9440 YTA - you have the power to keep your cats safely indoors. It's not cruel to keep them inside. If someone let's them out, they need to bring them back in immediately. Set up a gate by the door that has to be closed before opening the door so they can't just

run out. Put up a sign. You still have time to train and correct the behavior and you owe it to the animals to keep them safe. It's not your neighbor's fault or responsibility. If anything, request that she call you so you can go over there immediately to grab the cat.
