Cat-lover kicks out roommate, Kyle, after he promises to look after his cat, Luna, while on a 4-day trip, but 'forgets' to feed her or change her litterbox, despite being given written instructions and extra cash for his help: 'That was the final straw':

Am I the Je*k for Kicking My Roommate Out After He Forgot to Feed My Cat?

When I (26M) moved in with my roommate, Kyle (27M), we got along pretty well. He's chill, pays rent on time, and we both work odd hours so we don't see each other that often.

I have a cat, Luna, who's basically my baby. I've had her since college, and she's super affectionate but also a little shy around new people.
  • 04
A few weeks ago, I had to leave town for four days for my sister's wedding.
  • 05
I asked Kyle if he could feed Luna and clean her litter box while I was gone.
  • 06
He agreed, and I even wrote down detailed instructions, portion sizes, and emergency vet info just in case.
  • 07
I left him some extra cash and even ordered a pizza for him before I left as a thank-you.
  • 08
When I came back, the apartment reeked. Like, you could smell it from the hallway. I opened the door and Luna ran straight to me, meowing like crazy.

Her food bowl was empty, her water bowl was bone dry, and the litter box looked like it hadn't been touched in days.

She had peed outside the box, probably because she was desperate. I lost it. I confronted Kyle, and he acted super casual about it, saying he forgot a couple times and thought she'd be fine because cats are independent.
  • 12
I was furious. I told him that was neglect and that she could've gotten sick or worse.
  • 13
He rolled his eyes and said I was overreacting because it's just a cat. That was the final straw.
  • 14
I told him to pack up and leave by the end of the month. He called me dramatic and said I was ruining our friendship over a "stupid animal." Since then, mutual friends have been divided, some say I overreacted and should've just given him another chance, others say I was right to kick him out because he broke my trust completely.

Luna's fine now, thankfully, but I can't shake the anger I felt walking into that apartment.
  • 16
It wasn't just about the cat, it was the complete lack of care and respect. TL;DR: Left my roommate in charge of my cat for four days, came home to find she hadn't been fed or her litter box cleaned.

Confronted him, he didn't care, so I told him to move out. Friends are split, am I the jerk for kicking him out?

iNerdRage The fact that he agreed is the issue. He had the choice to say no but didn't. I don't think you're overreacting.

OP JellyfishBoring6845 Exactly, that's what bothered me most. He could've easily said no if he didn't want the responsibility, but he agreed and then completely ignored it. Thank you for understanding, it really validates how I felt about the situation.

Loose-Exchange-4181 Not the jerk at all. Forgetting once is human, but leaving an animal without food or water for days is neglect. You trusted him with a living being, and he showed zero responsibility or empathy. Kicking him out was completely justified.

OP JellyfishBoring6845 Thank you, that's exactly how I felt. It wasn't about a small mistake, it was pure neglect. If he couldn't handle a simple responsibility, I couldn't trust him as a roommate anymore. I really appreciate the support.

woodsman775 You paid him to do it as well! I'd get my money back as well as kicking him out.
  • 24
OP JellyfishBoring6845 Exactly! That's what I was thinking too. I paid him to make sure she was cared for, and he still didn't bother. I definitely plan on asking for that money back.

InsidePreference5199 Nah man, you're not the jerk. That's basic decency stuff. Like if someone can't handle feeding a cat for four days, they shouldn't be trusted with anything living. You left him instructions, money, food, everything. He didn't "forget," he just didn't care. I'd have kicked him out too.

OP JellyfishBoring6845 Yeah, that's exactly how I felt. I made it as easy as possible for him, and he still couldn't do the bare minimum. It really showed me he just didn't care at all, so kicking him out felt like the only right thing to do.
