"AITA for telling my younger brother the truth about why our dad missed his graduation, after our mom spent years covering for him?"

Older sisters tend to hold onto a lot of trauma. They spend their entire lives diminishing their own feelings to quell the bad feelings of others, and they don't bat an eye while doing so. It's a difficult thing to do, though; prioritizing everyone else instead of yourself. You no longer function to serve your own well-being, and instead, you bottle those bad feelings up until you can no longer keep them inside any longer.
The older sister in this next story explains that her father, who has another family after he divorced her mother, skipped out on her brother's graduation under the guise of an “emergency”. Of course, that wasn't true.

Excuses are how incompetent parents remain incompetent. Sometimes, these excuses are necessary to avoid harming a child in their early stages of development. The example in this story? The woman's little brother. Their father relied on “emergency” excuses because he didn't want his son to know the truth: he would rather hang out with his new family and new stepchild.
At the end of the day, it's integral for the child to learn who their parents truly are at some point in their lives, more preferably when they are old enough to soak in the news in a healthy manner.
The woman and older sister of the recent college graduate, found that it was time to stop lying to him, because he's now a grown adult and continually makes excuses for the man who couldn't care less about him. The truth must come out, and sometimes, the best person to give it to you straight is the person who cares about you most.
