  • A job candidate looks over a document while sitting in a chair, as a businesswoman politely stands to ask him to leave.
  • An interviewer called security for a candidate I sent because he got stuck in a chair, and the whole thing turned into a movie scene.

I received one of the strangest calls of my career from an HR manager at a client, about 5 minutes after an interview I had arranged was supposed to have ended.
  • She spoke in a sharp tone and asked me: 'How well do you know this Mark you sent us?' I was a bit startled.
  • A stern businesswoman looks at her clipboard as she continues the interview.
  • I had only met Mark over a video call for a sysadmin position. He wasn't a very enthusiastic person, but he was very polite and his CV was perfect for the job.
  • He had the exact specific skillset they needed, so I sent his details to the client and they were excited to meet him.
  • A stern businesswoman interviews a potential job candidate.
  • I told her that we had a good conversation on the video call but that I hadn't met him in person.
  • Her response was full of condescension. She told me: 'Look, Mark is currently stuck in one of our meeting room chairs.
  • The interview ended fifteen minutes ago, and we can't get him out. If you had seen him, you would have understood why this was a possibility.
  • This is a huge disruption.' In short, he was a rather large person and his body got wedged in the chair.
  • She then told me they had to call some of the maintenance guys to try and forcibly get him out of the chair.
  • The situation was apparently very embarrassing for everyone present, and especially for him, of course. At first, I felt guilty for not meeting him in person.
  • I thought maybe I should have given them a heads-up that he might need a wider chair.
  • But honestly, the more I thought about it, the angrier I got. Any respectable company should be equipped for any person of any size, and this HR manager's attitude was completely over the top and unprofessional.
  • This was back when I was working in recruitment, and it's one of those things that happened early in my career that I still cringe at when I remember it.
  • I really should have reported her.
  • Few_Carpenter_9185 I'd have said: "Well, we'd better hire him now. We're invested!" and then hung up on her.
