Opening shifts can be brutal, especially if you're not a morning person. However, before applying for a job, prospective employees need to consider the shift scheduling. If clocking in at 4:45 AM is a deal breaker for you, then maybe this job isn't the right fit.
This new hire knew what they were getting into, but they weren't responsible enough to prepare properly for their morning shift, resulting in an on-shift betrayal that will not likely be forgiven or forgotten.

I've embarked on my fair share of opener shifts. As a morning person, the early pace suits me and actually plays in favor of my circadian rhythm. However, as a result of my early birdliness, I've also seen my fair share of night owls who have left me hanging. When a morning shift requires two employees to open the business's doors, beginning the day with a short-staffed shift is not a terrific start for anyone, especially the single, solo worker left to do the work of two employees.
Frankly, if you're the opening shift guy who let down your coworker and showed up hours late, you'd better arrive begging for forgiveness.
The late riser didn't apologize; instead, he insisted his colleague risk their job and lie to management to cover for him.

After your coworker leaves you hanging like this, it's important to keep this character flaw in the back of your mind. Once someone shows you their true colors, it's important to listen to them, lest you risk letting their shortcomings and lack of foresight affect your own workflow.
When it comes ot any job, you've gotta keep your #1 safe: Aka yourself.
