Never let it be said that Timothée Chalamet is an actor without range. Since his breakout role in 2017’s Call Me By Your Name, he’s become a household name, and seems to be taking almost every big-budget movie acting opportunity that comes his way. Since 2023, he’s played the lead in Wonka, led the second of 3 Dune movies, and channeled Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. Most recently, he wowed audiences as the title character in the sports drama Marty Supreme. And now, in 2026, Timothée Chalamet has shown he’s not going anywhere, because he’s got a third Dune film to promote.
For a while, there was little criticism of Chalamet. So, this year, when he finally slipped up just before the Oscars, fans and haters alike were uproarious. His gaffe is less about what he actually said, and more about an ongoing issue that mainstream A-listers seem to have of overstaying their welcome in the spotlight and basking in the glow of acclaim, until the tide turns on them. It leaves them bewildered by the sudden tone shift.

Chalamet is far from the only big-name celebrity to stay too long in the limelight. You don’t even have to look too far into the past to find other celebs who’ve made the same mistakes.
Take Wicked and Wicked: For Good actresses Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, for example. They method-acted their way through interviews, press junkets, and red carpet appearances in 2024 and 2025, holding space for viral memes and sharing behind-the-scenes videos. They sparked rumors about their very touchy-feely working relationship, appearing together at every opportunity, and often wearing their green and pink wardrobe to really drive the point home that this was their moment to shine. After years of press for two Wicked movies, this became tiresome, with fans expressing their dissatisfaction in viral TikTok videos, while the internet simultaneously obsessed over the appearances of the cast members. Both Erivo and Grande seem to be taking time away from the spotlight for now (and wearing colors other than pink and green) with un-Wicked-related plans in the future for both actresses.

Billionaire musician Taylor Swift is another excellent example of a celeb overstaying her welcome. The Eras tour of 2023-2024 really was a memorable moment in music history, in which fans across the world shelled out money for costumes and concert tickets, then sang and danced to their heart’s content. Swift made $2 billion off the tour, breaking records while delivering a widely-beloved experience for all the attendees. Then, in 2025, she released the album The Life of a Showgirl, and fans despised it loudly and en masse. Although Swift didn’t put her foot in her mouth exactly like Chalamet, her continual re-release of the album with different vinyl variants struck listeners as distasteful. Fans had seemingly run out of admiration for Swift. If only she had bowed out of the spotlight for a while after the Eras tour wrapped up, perhaps absence would’ve made the heart grow fonder. -

So what did Timothée Chalamet say that was so upsetting to folks? Well, during a conversation with actor Matthew McConaughey televised in a Variety & CNN town hall, he made some flippant remarks about other art forms. In a segment where he and McConaughey talked about keeping movie theaters alive and feeling the pressure to make huge box-office hits, Chalamet insulted ballet and opera. He was dunking on these art forms, and punching down is uncouth in the public eye. “I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore,’” he said. “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there,” he added. However, you really can’t just tack on an “all respect where it’s due” statement when you’ve maligned someone’s career. This remark didn’t go unnoticed.

The ballet and opera communities came out in full force to oppose his hot take. Celebrities weighed in. Successful, professional ballet dancers and opera singers clapped back at him online. The principal of Timothée Chalamet’s own high school wrote an open letter to him, chiding him by saying, “We know your heart, and we know you know better.” Internet users, especially those on Twitter/X and TikTok, absolutely love to troll whoever needs to be taken down a peg. So, upon hearing the news about Timothée, that’s exactly what happened. For some, the nail in the Chalamet coffin seemed to be that “Club Chalamet,” a superfan who’s centered her online life around the actor, seems to be switching focus to Heated Rivalry actor Connor Storrie. (The Club Chalamet account rebuked this, saying that she “can focus on multiple things at once.”)

And as a coda to the whole debacle, Chalamet got lightly roasted by legendary comedian and Oscar host Conan O’Brien at the most recent Oscars. The camera panned to Chalamet, who reacted with a laugh and a nod, seemingly owning up to the gaffe heard around the world.
People love to build up celebrities, and then, once they’re thriving, they can’t wait to tear them down. It’s a tale as old as time, but social media really exacerbates this. Fans express their love for celebs while they’re underdogs, but as soon as they become mainstream or successful, they become a joke. Being a very rich person in a world where a lot of people are barely making ends meet certainly doesn’t help. Chalamet’s extremely wealthy partner is Kylie Jenner, whom he is frequently seen with on the red carpet. He is no longer a scrappy underdog actor just getting started in his career, he’s made it. The transition into superstardom isn’t easy for any person to navigate, and I can’t imagine what it must be like to have the world watching your every move.
Hindsight is 20/20. There’s no way that Chalamet, or Taylor Swift, or Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, could’ve known that they were overstaying their time in the spotlight. At least for Grande and Erivo, their Wicked franchise has come to a close. And Swift does seem to be taking a vacation from the music spotlight.

But Chalamet, on the other hand, is just gearing up for Dune: Part Three’s time in the press circuit. Perhaps he’ll cede the limelight to costars Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anya Tayor-Joy, and Javier Bardem. Maybe he’ll charm fans into forgetting about his big blunder. It’s up to Chalamet to decide, and everyone else will be the ones who tell him if he’s made the right choice or not.
