Birthday girl gives herself the gift of self-respect by standing up to pushy friends who were blatantly ignoring her cake choices: 'It isn't about the value of the cake!'

  • Birthday girl holding her birthday cake.
  • It was my birthday a couple of weeks ago, and my childhood friends and I had planned to go out to celebrate.
  • They were also supposed to come by and get ready at mine before we headed out.
  • A day or two before the celebration, they asked if my partner would be getting the cake.
  • They offered to get it if it wouldn't be possible for him (he works the night shift).
  • I took up their offer, and they started sending me links of different cakes from bakeries I liked so I could choose one I preferred.
  • I said any of three they'd sent would do. On the day of the celebration, a couple of hours before, my partner texts me that a cake had been delivered to our house just before he had to leave for work.
  • He sent me a picture of the cake, and it was: A. Not from any of the bakeries my friends had suggested and I'd picked B.
  • Not very nice to look at C. One of the cheapest options on an instant food delivery app (I looked up how much it cost - about 2-3 USD).
  • Low-cost birthday cake delivered in a box from a last-minute order on a food delivery app.
  • I immediately felt hurt, because to me it signified a lack of care. Friends who had known me for decades, who'd OFFERED to get me cake as a nice gesture for my birthday and even sent me options had at the last moment decided not to take my preferences into consideration at all, nor put in any money/effort into making me feel special.
  • It was also too late to get the cake I actually wanted even if my partner tried to order it and coordinate delivery from his workplace (he still offered, though).
  • I decided to confront my friends before the celebration, and left them a message explaining why I was upset and asking for their side of the story.
  • They said they'd sent a brief text in the series of messages previously about how they also knew another place with "cute" cakes which they might get the cake from.
  • They stated I didn't said yes or no to this message so they thought it would be okay to go ahead and order from there (?????
  • I'd explicitly said yes to the other bakeries, however). They said they had no idea the cake would look the way it did and the picture on the app was different.
  • At no point in time did they offer to get it exchanged. I thought they wouldn't show up to the celebration, but they did, and acted very awkward throughout, as if they were forced to be there.
  • They barely made conversation, sat at the table in silence, and left in an hour. It felt more like they were doing the bare minimum and avoiding feeling guilty by not bailing on my birthday, than actually them being there to make me feel loved.
  • Right after the disastrous celebration, I headed to another friend's house because I didn't want to sulk at home.
  • When I told them what happened, they immediately ordered a box of mini-cakes for me (so I could try multiple flavours 1).
  • Box of mini cakes with different flavors, delivered as a thoughtful gift.
  • This salvaged my evening, although I was still hurt by the others' actions. (They also went on to put in a LOT of effort to celebrate another friend's birthday a few days later, btw.
  • Additional info: it isn't about the value of the cake, all of these people come from money).
  • They haven't apologised yet. AITA for fighting about this and being angry still?
