Neighbor declares himself the block's parking sheriff and leaves such ridiculous notes that residents start a collection: 'Car in the same spot for too long'

  • Neighborhood street with cars parked along a tight roadway.
  • I want to be clear that I understand parking frustration because I have experienced it. Our street is genuinly tight and people don't always park considerately.
  • I get it. What I do not get is my neighbor three doors down, who I will call Gerald because that name fits him perfectly, who has decided that the solution to this is to become a one man parking authority with a notepad and what appears to be a dedicated supply of yellow sticky notes.
  • Gerald leaves notes on cars for things like being parked too close to a driveway that is not his, being parked at an angle he finds displeasng, and on one occasion for parking a vehicle he described as "commercial looking" on a residential street, which was my colleague's van.
  • None of these are violations. I have checked. Gerald has left three notes on my car in the past two months.
  • The first said I was blocking the sight line from his driveway, which is three houses away from where I was parked.
  • The second said I had left my car in the same spot for too long, which is not regulated on our street.
  • A vigilant neighbor watches over neatly parked cars along a neighborhood street.
  • The third was a general note about "community responsibility" that didn't specify an actual complaint and seemed to be more of a philosophical statement about parking.
  • I have started a collection. My neighbor two doors up has also been receiving notes and we have begun comparing them.
  • The variety of concerns Gerald has managed to identify is actualy impressive from a creative standpoint.
  • I have not confronted him because I genuinly believe it would not help and might escalate things.
  • A collection of fake parking regulations written on yellow sticky notes.
  • am simply documenting and waiting to see where this goes.
  • NombreCurioso1337 Buy a pad of identical sticky notes. Imitate Gerald's hand writing. Start leaving obscene notes. Get graphic. Imply Gerald has been doing things to the cars.
  • John_Tacos Leaving flyers for n vehicles parked in the right of way is in most locations a violation of city ordinance. Unless it's a note about a collision or something like that.
  • stjarnalux Does Gerald have a car? Have everyone leave him notes on the car requesting he stop leaving notes on theirs.
  • lankaxhandle It's time for a Bingo board with all messages. Make this interactive!
  • CandylandCanada Send him an email or letter stating that he is not allowed to touch your vehicle for any reason. Intimate that the next time that he puts a sticky on your car will be trouble (keep it vague as to what you will do, but be menacing).
  • coy_glimmer Man gave himself a job nobody applied for
  • wwJones Mount a corkboard to a post with a piece of same-sized clear plexiglass hinged at the top so you can swing it up. Put a sign on it "GERALDS BOARD" so all your neighbors can put the dumbest ones up for everyone to see.
  • Mustang_Erik I'd be leaving response notes on Gerald's front door. Things like "my car says your house is blocking its line of sight" and maybe some philosophy about parking on public streets and being a good neighbor.
