  • My manager texts at midnight and acts like ignoring it makes you a bad employee.

11:47pm. I have a 6am shift tomorrow. My phone buzzes. It's my manager asking if I can swap with someone for Saturday. I didn't reply until morning. Now there's "a vibe."
  • I don't understand the expectation that my personal phone is a 24/7 work hotline. I'm hourly. I clock out. I should be able to actually clock out. Is this normal? How are you all dealing with it?
  • Commenters gave their takes and reactions to this.

anneonnymous By turning the ringer off at night. I'm not dealing with anything that time of night or until I'm awake in the morning. After 11 is a reasonable time to assume someone would be sleeping.
  • LumpyOpportuni.. The "vibe" thing is the manipulation part. You didn't do anything wrong but you're made to feel like you did.
  • No_Seaweed_44... Ignore the calls and texts, and document any attempts to contact you after-hours for work related issues. Morning Boss, I've arrived for my 6AM shift, and just noticed I missed your call/text @ ? on x/x/2026, if you're still in need of xyz, let me know. Not your b
  • willdallas2020 I've ignored texts from my manager while I was actually at work. They dont pay my personal phone bill.
  • A woman holds a silver and red phone in her hands
  • TheBigLesley If it's an iPhone use the features to block the number outside of hours and move on. You can also say your partner, parent, pet goat have a no phones in the bedroom rule so unless you are on call and paid the phones "off" from x time
  • b_lueemarlin Flying mod or turn the phone off. What he want to say when you are already in bed. In my country nobody would do that usually here after 8pm you don't get a call from anybody anymore. It is considered as very r de.
  • purplelilac701 What you allow is what will continue. You have to "train" your manager in how you want to be treated.
  • Big-Win8578 Last job I had would call newhere between 10pm and 2am asking you to come in on your day off at 6 am for a 12 hour shift then wonder why I didn't answer or told them no... some employers have no respect for other people these days
  • hemkersh DnD mode comes on at 10 pm for me
  • Smokedealers84 Just keep ignoring.
  • Forward_Ad_4117 Completely normal and completely wrong. The blurred line between off- clock and on-call is one of the most normalized workplace problems out there
  • TheEvil Of TwoLes... If I was awake to see the call/text, I'd remote into work, clock in, and then reply. I'd also let them know per our on call policy that this silly attempt to contact me at midnight just got me two hours of overtime pay. Now what did they need?
  • NightMgr Text him at 130 am saying you need $300 fast. See if it works both ways.
  • PaleontologistSa... About 9-12 months before I left my toxic job I made sure to put my boss on silent from 5:30 p to 8 a. She'd be so mad when I didn't respond
  • Mediocre-Blueja... i dont answer when they call me at regular hours. im not clocked in, im not talking to you. fire me for it lol.
  • purpletreefrog007 I guess you're not in Australia otherwise everyone would be citing Right To Disconnect legislation.
  • Claque-2 Your boss is crazy and is creating a vibe because your boss is crazy. Aggressively ignore the vibe.
  • Midwest Nightgirl I would be polite but just let them know you don't see messages after bed time. If they feel some kinda way about it, that's their problem.
  • BKalIDAY24 I'm not hourly, but if I was my response, would be. Due to this being a work related communication I'd prefer to be communicated with while I'm on the clock. I understand that that's not always feasible. I can try to
  • make exceptions for emergencies however, the expectation should be that if I receive communications after hours that the responses will not come until I'm back at work.
