“Trash panda” wasn’t always their brand - raccoons sized the opportunity that cities accidentally created, with the trash modern humanity leaves after itself. But why trash drew them in? You see, raccoons are natural omnivorous generalists. In the wild, they already forage along rivers and forest edges, eating whatever’s available - fruit, insects, eggs, small animals, even carrion. That means that they’re flexible eaters (not picky specialists), curious problem-solvers with very dexterous front paws, and comfortable exploring new objects and smells.
Human settlements basically amplify everything they like: Concentrated, predictable food (garbage, pet food, compost), fewer predators (wolves, large cats largely gone from cities), and they provide shelter (attics, sewers, crawl spaces mimic dens). So from a raccoon’s perspective, a human city is less “unnatural” and more “open buffet with housing”.
