Breaking a lease is extremely inconvenient, and part of that is its high cost. If you're living with someone and your name isn't on the lease, you can move out at any time. But if your name is on the lease and neither you nor your ex can afford to live in the apartment on your income alone, you both need to cut your losses, break the lease, and find new places to live. That might mean moving in with totally random roommates, crashing on a friend's couch for a while, or moving back in with your parents, and none of those are particularly great options.

The woman in this story just got broken up with, and she was perfectly happy to get out of the apartment she shared with her ex-boyfriend. After all, he paid for the apartment costs, while she covered household expenses like groceries. Her boyfriend had put a deposit down on a new apartment, and now that they have broken up, he wants her to pay him back for the money he lost by breaking the lease. Why would she do that if he was the one who broke up with her?
