“Four kittens born in a project car”

"Five weeks ago, I saw a pregnant cat (Cara Cara) wandering around my house. She was due any day. She's had kittens before, and we still have her first batch of babies hanging around our house as feral. They don't bother anyone, and my neighbor feeds them. We are in the process of getting the boys neutered. The only girl has already been spayed.

We have a project car, my husband's Miata, and the transmission was out for repairs, leaving a hole in the body for our feral cats to get in and out of. They weren't doing anyone harm, so it was fine. Just some orange fur in the seat and floorboard. But then I saw mama, and I just knew she was going to give birth in there. The day we went to cover the hole, we saw the kittens.

We originally thought they would be ok in the car. It was a safe place for the kittens. But then it got hot, and mama started panting. I freaked out and rushed to get her into our climate-controlled garage. It took a few hours to catch her, and I ultimately had to personally push her into the trap, but we got her. She and the kittens have been in the garage since the kittens were 4 days old.

They have grown so much in the past 5 weeks. They are playing, starting to eat wet food, drinking water, and pooping on their own now! Today was their first vet visit for a check-up and some deworm. They are doing extremely well, and they will be going back next weekend for their first vaccinations.

I have been in touch with a rescue since the day I found them, and our plan is to give the kittens to the rescue so they will be safely adopted out to vetted homes. Mama is getting spayed and then going back outside with her older babies. Whether she chooses to stay or not is up to her.
