Yeah, this little critter has an absurd number of names. Here are some of the most commonly used ones around the world:
In English, it's called a Roly-Poly or a Pill Bug in the USA, a Woodlouse in the UK, and a Slater in New Zealand. Some other USA regional names include Doodlebug and Sowbug (for the non-rolling species). And, hilariously enough, in some regions of the UK it's also called a Butchy Boy or a Cheggy Pig.
In Spanish, it's called Cochinilla De La Humedad (“moisture bug”, appropriately for the environment they thrive in). In German, it's called a Kellerassel (“cellar isopod”, so punctual). In Dutch, it's a Pissebed (literally “bed-wetter,” charmingly insulting). In Italian, they're called Porcellino Di Terra (“little pig of the earth”, even though there's nothing between them and pigs). In Portuguese, they're named Tatuzinho-de-jardim (“little garden armadillo”, which is so cute). In Hebrew, it's called Kadrurit ("little ball", which is what they look like rolled up).
So yeah, tiny creature, but with a global branding success.
