We understand the impulse to ensure that, as a manager, you have hands-on involvement in everything. On some level, that impulse to know the ins and outs of every order, every request, and every transaction is admirable. However, a good manager is not only hands-on when it comes to their approach to a team, but they also should know when to trust their employees.
In this case, this manager was coming into an operation that was already smooth and thriving. Sure, he could give his two cents and attempt to improve the repair process, but in order to come up with truly useful solutions, one has to listen to one's employees first. If this manager had taken the time to really ask the people on his team what could be improved upon to make for a more efficient and healthy workplace environment, then perhaps his ideas would be better received.
Instead, however, his new pitch about having him given hand-written approval to every single request from a client was… well, not reflective of what the folks on his team actually needed. In fact, he just made the process all the more inefficient and counterproductive. It's always amusing to see that happen when a manager has the purest of intentions but lacks the insight to actually achieve his or her goal.
