Ok, we see the point - chickens are portrayed as very industrious animals in medieval manuscripts. But did you know that every animal had a very specific set of meanings in manuscripts and books of this time? Chickens, for example - and particularly roosters - primarily symbolized vigilance, religious communication, and the dawn of a new faith. So it's no wonder you could see medieval rooster drawings having them act in accordance with that. But because chickens as a whole were a staple of everyday life, they also represented peasant agriculture, nurturing motherhood, and occasionally cowardice - you know how fast chickens can run from danger…

You know there's a reason why you see so many chickens lying on random things that are not eggs, right? It's all in their brain - chickens have an extremely strong maternal instinct, which is called “broodiness”. It's an urge to establish a safe nest, or simple nesting preparation. When a hen sits on random items like rocks, golf balls, or just an empty corner, she is acting on basic biological “broodiness” drives. It just sometimes manifests with puppies, apparently.
