20-year-old doesn't get resort job, dad declines to budget her in on family vacation they've been taking since she was 7

When does a child have to pay their way with their parents?

For most responsible people, a crucial part of growing up is that you stop being totally reliant on the bank of mom and dad. The majority of people would agree that one major rite of passage into adulthood is earning some of your own money and not expecting parents to pay for everything you do. Of course, depending on their financial situation, there is nothing wrong with accepting a little help now and then. It's just that it usually isn't fair to demand it all of the time.

This can be a tough transition for those who are taking their first steps to figuring out an independent life, and to be fair, there are parents out there who seem to do everything in their power to make it a difficult experience. Still, that doesn't mean that their expectations are unjustified. Not every reality check can be a gentle one, and much like when they made you finish your math homework or eat your vegetables, there is a chance you may be somewhat grateful for the experience one day. We all have to learn to stand on our own two feet one way or another.

A young woman was left with hurt feelings after her dad encouraged her to try to get a job at the vacation resort that they had gone to every year throughout her childhood. She was reluctant, not least as she already worked two jobs at home, and she didn't end up getting the role.
When she told her parents this, they revealed that they hadn't paid for her to join them on this year's trip as they assumed she would be working there. She felt that this assumption was unfair, and decided she didn't want to pay to join them. She wasn't sure if she was taking things too hard.
Am I overreacting because my parents didn’t budget me into our family vacation?
