  • Landlord raising rent cuz i WFH... first time renting and I already regret moving out lol

moved in 5 months ago and yesterday my landlord texted saying hes raising my rent cuz im running a business from home. im literally just a remote worker on my laptop all day lol no clients or anything. asked him to show me where it says that in the lease and now hes ghosting me.
  • this is my first time renting lived with my grandma before and im already regretting it can he even legally change rent mid lease just cuz i WFH?
  • Commenters gave their advice and opinions.

Ok-Opportunity2280 He can't legally do this. A lease is a binding contract.
  • plantsandpizza He cannot do this but I would be prepared for the increase when your lease ends (check your local laws). He's ghosting because he knows you're right. Some landlords are shady some are idiots and it makes them shady landlords. I'd drop it and let him just ghost.
  • Charming-Humor2689 working on a laptop doesnt mean ur running a business i thnk he just trying to scare a first time renter
  • Tenderpink19 As a renter, you are not responsible for any more than you agreed to on your lease. Your landlord can't make you comply with terms that aren't spelled out in the lease. If it is not in the lease, it is not enforceable.

  • Main_Cauliflower5479 You're not running a business. You are an employee. I assume you are paying for your own internet access. You are not running a business. Fight this.
  • Potential_Minute1496 Yeah so he cant do this, also working remote from home is not owning or running your own business
  • AdOrganic4835 Pay the originally contracted amount, ignore the notices. If he sues you he will lose and be stuck with the legal fees.
  • midwestgal522 He can't raise the rent with an active lease. Advise him you need this "increase" in writing as your attorney would like to see it
  • GirlPhoenix Rising Let HIM break the lease and you can sue for triple damages. Stay where you are and honor the contract you signed.
  • Run_Rabb1t_Run No, he can't just break a legal contract. He's not responding to you because he's hoping you pay the greater amount. Doing this would show that you agreed to changing the rent to a higher amount, you would be yourself over if you did this. He's hoping you fall for the trap. Don't.
  • Pay only the amount the lease you signed says. Turn off any 'autopay' set ups if you are using those to pay rent. Pay the exact amount as listed in the lease, do not change anything.
  • If he tries to charge you a different amount, get him to put all requests and threats through email or mail. Do not speak on the phone regarding this. Say you will email them regarding it. Send your responses through email *and* certified mail only. If he calls, let it go to voicemail and respond through email.
  • Number-2-Sis Do you have a lease? What are the terms of the lease? Are utilities included as part of your rent? If you are month to month and utilities are included, utilities will increase if you are home all day so LL is likely trying to make sure to cover his added expenses.
  • LostLemon007 If you have a 12 month lease stick to it Give plenty of notice and keep records of said notice that you will be moving out and not resigning. Most common 60 day notice is required
